What is a Cataract?

Cataracts are typically caused by the natural aging process that occurs inside of the eye. It’s a gradual clouding of the eye’s clear, natural lens that can, over time, make your vision less sharp.

What Causes Cataracts?

While cataracts are typically caused by the natural aging process of the eye (everyone will develop cataracts if we live long enough), there are other factors that can cause cataracts, or exacerbate the development of cataracts, including:

  • Overexposure to the sun’s harmful rays
  • Eye injury or inflammation
  • Use of certain medications
  • Genetics
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking or alcohol abuse
  • Congenital cataracts (born with cataracts)

Blurry/cloudy vision or difficulty reading without bright light
Glare and/or light sensitivity
Poor night vision
Colors appear dull and washed out or yellow
