Advanced Cataract Options

Advanced Cataract Options

At The Eye Guys, we offer several effective options to treat astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery. Our goal is to help you not only see clearly after cataract removal but also reduce or eliminate your need for glasses—especially for distance vision. In the past, we used a technique called Limbal Relaxing Incisions (LRIs), performed with ultra-precise diamond blades. This was a great option for patients with mild to moderate astigmatism. For those with moderate to severe astigmatism, we often recommend a Toric Intraocular Lens (IOL). This special lens implant corrects both your cataracts and your astigmatism in one step, giving you sharper, clearer vision.

Astigmatism Treatment

Exploring Your Options with Cataract Surgery

Today, our most advanced and preferred method is the LenSx® Femtosecond Laser. It allows for the highest level of precision and accuracy when correcting astigmatism during cataract surgery. While Medicare does approve this treatment, it’s not fully covered. But don’t worry—our team will walk you through all your options and help you understand any costs involved. If you’re considering cataract surgery and have astigmatism, we’re here to guide you to the best solution for your eyes and your lifestyle.

Laser Cataract Surgery

At The Eye Guys, we were the first in the Augusta area — and among the first in the nation — to offer LenSx® Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery. This exciting breakthrough in cataract technology transforms traditional cataract surgery by making it safer, more precise, and more predictable than ever before.

  • Computer-Guided Laser Accuracy: LenSx automates critical steps like corneal incisions, capsulotomy, and lens fragmentation for consistent precision that’s more challenging to achieve manually.
  • Higher Safety & Comfort: With laser-made incisions instead of blades, the procedure is more predictable, more precise, and gentle on the eye.
  • It’s ideal for patients who want more benefits than standard cataract removal offers — especially those interested in Advanced Lifestyle Lenses (IOLs) like multifocal or toric lenses that correct astigmatism.
  • LenSx offers planning based on 3-D imaging of your eye, helping us tailor the surgery precisely to your eyes.

Advanced Lifestyle Lens Options

At The Eye Guys in Augusta and Aiken, we offer the latest breakthroughs in cataract lens implants to restore and even upgrade your vision. Today’s advanced intraocular lenses (IOLs) can help you enjoy life without the constant need for glasses or contacts.

Here are some of the Advanced Lifestyle Lens options that we offer:

The PanOptix IOL is the first and only FDA-approved trifocal lens. It’s designed to restore a full range of vision, allowing you to see clearly up close, at arm’s length, and far away, often without the need for glasses. Imagine enjoying the following activities with a PanOptix IOL:

  • Reading your phone
  • Working comfortably at a computer
  • Driving with confidence
  • Hobbies like golfing, sewing, or painting

PanOptix IOL is ideal for patients who want to regain a youthful range of vision and enjoy visual freedom.

The Vivity™ Extended Depth of Focus IOL is designed to give you natural, effortless vision at all distances—with fewer night‑time distractions like glare or halos. This innovative lens provides a smooth, continuous range of vision, so you can clearly see up close, at arm’s length, and far away. With the Vivity lens, you can enjoy:

  • Crisp, clear distance vision
  • Excellent intermediate and functional near vision
  • Reduced glare and halos for more comfortable night driving
  • Freedom to enjoy an active lifestyle without constantly reaching for glasses

For patients with astigmatism, Vivity is also available in a Toric version that combines all of these benefits with astigmatism correction for even sharper results.

If you have astigmatism and need cataract surgery, a Toric intraocular lens (IOL) can correct both problems at once. Unlike standard lens implants, the Toric IOL is specially designed to address the uneven curvature of the cornea that causes astigmatism—allowing light to focus more precisely on the retina. This means you can enjoy sharper distance vision and, in many cases, rely less on glasses after surgery. With a Toric IOL you can:

  • Achieve clear, crisp distance vision
  • Reduce or even eliminate the need for glasses
  • Enjoy greater freedom for everyday activities like driving and watching TV

Traditional lens implants can’t correct corneal distortion, but the Toric IOL is built to do just that, giving you a more complete visual solution during cataract surgery.

If you have moderate to high astigmatism, a Toric IOL can give you the clear, crisp distance vision you’ve been missing, often with far less need for glasses. Designed to match your unique eye shape, this advanced lens offers a long‑lasting solution so you can enjoy life with greater visual freedom. At The Eye Guys, we were the first in Augusta to bring Toric IOL technology to our patients, and with years of specialized experience, we know how to help you achieve your best possible vision.
