You Have Questions, We have Answers!

What are the symptoms of cataracts?
Cataracts usually develop slowly over time – in fact, in early stages symptoms may be so mild that you may not realize your vision is changing. As cataracts become more dense, you will experience one or more of the following symptoms: blurry or cloudy vision, glasses prescription changes often, colors appear dull & washed out, difficulty reading in low light, poor night vision, and/or halos or glare around lights.
When is the right time to have cataract surgery?
If left untreated, cataracts will eventually begin to interfere with normal, everyday activities. The time to have cataract surgery is when your quality of life is impacted by poor vision. The longer you wait to have cataract surgery, the more difficult they are to remove.
Is cataract surgery done with a laser?
Standard cataract surgery is not done with a laser. At The Eye Guys, we offer Advanced Cataract Surgery with laser technology for a safer, more precision option for our patients.
Is cataract surgery performed on both eyes at the same visit?
Typically, cataract surgery is performed on one eye at a time with a couple of weeks in between to ensure the eye is healing properly.

Is cataract surgery painful?
A local anesthetic is used to ensure that you are awake and comfortable during your cataract treatment.
Can cataracts come back?
Once the cataract-affected lens has been removed and replaced with a synthetic lens, cataracts cannot come back. In some cases, patients may be develop a relatively common “secondary cataract” which is a clouding of the capsule that hold your new lens. This can be quickly and painlessly treated in office with a YAG laser treatment.
Are stitches used during my cataract surgery?
At the Eye Guys, we perform no-stitch cataract surgery. On occasion, a single stitch may be used that will be slowly absorbed by the body. Patients do not typically feel the stitch or experience any discomfort from the stitch.

How long does my IOL (Intraocular Lens) last?
The lens will last for the rest of your life.
When can I drive after cataract surgery?
Most patients resume driving about 24 hours after their cataract procedure. Patients are evaluated on an individual basis, and your doctor will discuss this and other activities with you as your eyes heal.
Can I swim after cataract surgery?
Patients can swim about 2 weeks after their cataract procedure. Your doctor will discuss post-op care and restrictions with you prior to your cataract procedure.
Will I need to wear glasses after cataract surgery?
With standard cataract surgery, you will experience better vision but may need glasses for distance and/or up close activities. For patients who wish to reduce their dependence on glasses, there are Advanced Lifestyle Lens options that will allow you to see distance, intermediate, and up close with very little dependence on glasses.

When can I golf, exercise, and resume most other activities?
Usually the day after your cataract surgery, but you will need to refrain from lifting heavy weights and other objects for about a week.
