Descemet’s Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK)

imageeyeThere is good news for patients with corneal disease who require corneal transplantation due to corneal swelling.

The cornea is like the crystal of a watch. When a watch gets water inside the crystal, a fog forms preventing a clear view of the watch face. The same thing happens when the cornea of the human eye swells. Until now, this condition required a full thickness removal and transplantation of a human cornea. Although this has been a very successful procedure, the visual recovery can be a year or longer. Problems that can be encountered with this approach include astigmatism and a permanent structural weakness of the eye. Descemet’s Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK) is a revolutionary new transplant procedure whereby only the diseased inner layer of the cornea is transplanted. This reduces visual recovery time to approximately four months, eliminates the possibility of increased astigmatism, and can be done without corneal stitches. In addition, the eye does not become structurally weakened.

The availability of the DSAEK procedure allows surgeons to intervene earlier in the course of diseases like Fuchs’ Corneal Dystrophy and pseudophakic corneal edema. The corneal specialists at the The Eye Guys practice, Dr. Bradley Bertram and Dr. Ryan Smith, perform DSAEK at their on-site surgical center, Eye Surgery Center of Augusta, LLC.
